The best princess books for kids give the princess something to do. In ours, nobody waits to be rescued: your child is the princess, illustrated from one photo and named in the story, and they lead every page. The Princess & The Birthday Balloons is a birthday flight to candy clouds and valleys of gems. The Great Birthday Expedition is for the princess who would rather explore, in a crown made of orchids. And if you want a story where your child rescues someone else, our Cinderella series makes them Cinderella's brave best friend.
All three princess books are personalized hardcovers for ages 2 to 10, and you see a free preview of your child as the princess before you buy. You can also browse them together in our princess collection. This is a guide to our own books.

Are there princess books where the princess saves herself?
Yes, and the simplest test is to ask what the princess does on each page. In many classic fairy tales, she waits: for the ball, for the prince, for the spell to break. In the books worth buying, she chooses, tries, explores and solves problems.
In our three princess books, there's no tower and no rescue at all. Your child is the princess, and the story follows what they do: open a secret door, take off into the sky, ride a leopard through the jungle. The Princess Within goes one step further and takes the magic out of the dress entirely. The point of the crown, in these books, is that your child already has what it takes.
If your child wants a story where they do the rescuing, the Cinderella series is the one. Your child is Cinderella's best friend and Guardian, and across six books they help free a trapped Silver Stag, prove that a wolf the whole village fears is really a guardian, and track down a crow who hid the squirrels' winter food. The series is written for ages 3 to 10.
The Princess Within: a princess book about confidence
The Princess Within starts on a quiet morning, when your child slips out of bed and finds "a strange, secret door." Behind it is a long hall of princess gowns "in shimmering light," and each one does something a dress can't usually do.

The ruby gown is "a fabric of courage for facing a fright." The meadow green one is "the gentlest kindness that ever was seen." There's patience sewn into a gown of pink petals, joy in one of golden sunlight, peace in velvet blue, wonder in starlight, confidence in rose gold and flame, and creativity in a rainbow of silk that whispers "problems have more than one key."

Then your child steps in front of the mirror, and it shows only the child from the start, with "no ruby, no velvet, just her own quiet heart." The dresses were magic, the book says, but your child was too. On harder days afterward, the colors come back to help: "a whisper of ruby when courage was right." The last line says it plainly: "the magic was never the gown," it's you.
It's a gentle, rhyming read for bedtime, and a good fit for a child who loves sparkle and could use a reminder that their strengths come with them into any room, crown or no crown.

The Princess & The Birthday Balloons: a princess birthday book
On your child's birthday morning, in a castle on Emerald Hill, seven balloons are tied to the balcony, filled not with air but "with stardust and wishes on shimmering strings." Your child touches them and floats up past the garden. "I'm flying!"

The balloons carry your child from one stop to the next. First stop is Sugar-Cloud Station, where a Baker-Bear hands out cupcakes and a choir of cookies sings happy birthday. Then the Valley of Shimmering Gems, where a Blue Griffin picks a bouquet of sapphire and jade. "Now onward!" your child cries, and off they go to dance with pixies in Glimmering Grove and to the Tower of Feathers, where the birds crown your child "Princess of the Sky." At dusk the balloons bring them home, and the book ends on a line worth remembering on any birthday: "the best place to be is right where you are."
It's a natural pick for a birthday child who loves castles and color. If you're shopping for a birthday more broadly, our birthday book guide covers all five of our birthday stories.

The Great Birthday Expedition: for the princess who'd rather explore
Some children want the crown and the trail. The Great Birthday Expedition opens with a neon toucan flying down with "a crown made of orchids and gold," announcing "For June the explorer! So brave and so bold!" (Your child's name goes where June's is.) Monkeys stitch your child an explorer suit with sparkly boots.

From there it's a birthday told in adventures: a ride on a pink-spotted leopard, a path of a thousand blue butterflies, zebras who ask your child to paint their stripes, hippos blowing bubbles, and a climb up the rocks beside a waterfall "with a confident leap." At the end there's a treasure chest with a gown made of petals and a wand made of light, a cake by firefly lantern, and a cozy goodnight.

What are the best princess books for preschoolers?
Short rhyming books with big, bright pictures and a princess who does things. All three of ours are written in rhyme, with about 20 story pages each, a length we'd suggest for story time with a three- or four-year-old. Because your child is the princess, ask them to find themselves in the pictures as you read.
For bedtime, start with The Princess Within, which ends tucked in under the moon. For a birthday, choose The Princess & The Birthday Balloons or The Great Birthday Expedition, which both end with the birthday child drifting off to sleep after a big day.
Are princess books good for boys?
Yes. Plenty of boys love castles, crowns and fairy tales, and there's no reason a book has to match a child's gender to be their favorite. If your son wants to star in a princess story, the Cinderella series makes your child Cinderella's best friend and Guardian, the brave one at her side in every adventure.
Are there princess chapter books for first graders?
Our princess books are picture books, not chapter books. Each page has a short rhyme, so a first grader who is learning to read can often read them aloud to you, with their own name in every story as extra motivation. For a longer story arc, the six Cinderella books follow one adventure from book to book, and each book adds a keepsake to your child's satchel that comes back later in the series.
How does a personalized princess book work?

- Upload one photo. Add your child's name and one clear photo of their face. Our photo tips help you choose.
- See a free preview. You get your child's illustrated character in a scene from the book you chose, with no account or credit card needed. The preview doesn't show every page of the finished book. Read how the free preview works.
- Get the hardcover. Each personalized book is printed to order after you buy, then shipped to you.
In the US, Standard delivery takes 5 to 10 business days from order to arrival, including printing. Checkout shows the delivery estimate for your address. If the book is a gift, look for gift wrap at checkout, and if you're buying for someone else's child, read our guide to buying a book as a gift first.
Before you order a princess book

Choose by what your child loves most. A child who dresses up every day will love The Princess Within. A birthday princess will want the balloons. A child with muddy knees and a magnifying glass will want the expedition. And a child who wants to save the day gets to do it, alongside Cinderella, in the Cinderella series.
Questions parents ask
What are the best princess books where the princess saves herself?
Look for a princess who acts instead of waiting. In our three princess books, nobody needs rescuing: your child is the princess and leads the story. The Princess Within is about courage, kindness and confidence. The Princess & The Birthday Balloons is a birthday flight to candy clouds and gem valleys. The Great Birthday Expedition is a jungle adventure in an orchid crown. In our Cinderella series, your child goes further and helps rescue others, like a trapped silver stag. This is a guide to our own books, not an independent ranking.
What is a good princess book for a preschooler?
A short rhyming read-aloud with big pictures works best. All three of our princess books are written in rhyme, and each one is personalized, so your preschooler finds their own face in the gowns, the balloons or the jungle. The Princess Within is the gentlest and works well at bedtime. Magic Story books are written for ages 2 to 10.
What is a good princess birthday book?
The Princess & The Birthday Balloons starts on your child's birthday morning in a castle, when seven balloons filled with stardust lift them into the sky. The Great Birthday Expedition is a birthday for a child who would rather explore, with a crown of orchids, a pink leopard and a cake at sunset. Both are personalized with your child's photo and name.
Are there princess books about confidence instead of looks?
The Princess Within is built around that idea. Each gown in a secret hall reveals a strength, from courage and kindness to patience and wonder. At the end, the mirror shows your child without any gown at all, and the book's last line is that the magic was never the gown, it's you.
Are princess books okay for boys?
Yes. Any child can love castles, crowns and fairy tales. If your son wants to star in one, our Cinderella series makes your child Cinderella's best friend and Guardian, the one who helps her through each adventure.
Are your princess books chapter books?
No. They are personalized picture books with about 20 story pages each and a short rhyme on each page. A first grader who is learning to read can often read them aloud, and younger children enjoy them as read-alouds.
Can I see my child as the princess before I buy?
Yes. Upload one photo and you get a free personalized preview, with no account or credit card needed. It shows your child's illustrated character in a scene from the book you choose. It doesn't show every page of the finished book, and the sample pages show our example child.
