The best Christian bedtime books for kids are short enough to finish before eyes close, calm enough to end the day, and they give a child simple words to pray. The Theo collection from Magic Story has six bedtime books like that, and each one puts your child's name and illustrated likeness into the story: A Few Minutes With Jesus, a guided first prayer; God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You and God Called Me By My Name, bedtime blessings about being made and known by God; The Psalm of the Good Shepherd, which brings Psalm 23 to bedtime; When You Only See Footprints, the Footprints story for hard days; and The Tickles of God, a story about joy with Grandma. They're written for ages 2 to 10, and you see a free preview of your child's character before you buy.

This is our guide to our own books. It answers the questions parents and grandparents ask us about faith at bedtime: which book to start with, how to pray with a little one, and what makes a good gift.

A first prayer book: A Few Minutes With Jesus

If you're looking for a first prayer book, start here. A Few Minutes With Jesus is a guided prayer that speaks to your child directly and by name. It opens with the reassurance most children need before they'll try: "You don't need complicated words to talk to Him."

Then it walks through a prayer one small step at a time. Your child names someone they love ("Just say their name"), thinks of people who need food, a home or healing, makes a list of what they need, tells Jesus what feels hard to forgive, and says thank you for something good. It ends where a bedtime prayer should: "You can talk to Jesus every single day."

  • A child kneels on a bed with eyes closed and hands folded in prayer, in warm light, in A Few Minutes With Jesus.

Starting to pray Hands folded, eyes closed, and no complicated words.

  • The child hands a basket of bread and fruit to another child outside a village cottage in A Few Minutes With Jesus.

Thinking of others "He loves a generous heart."

  • The child stands with arms open in a beam of golden light with a dove above in A Few Minutes With Jesus.

Never alone "He's always waiting for you."

Bedtime blessings about who your child is

Two of the Theo books are quiet bedtime blessings. They don't have a plot so much as a message, read slowly, with your child's name in nearly every line. They're a good answer to the question "what are Christian books about identity?", because both are about one thing: your child was made on purpose and is known by God.

God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You

"Long before you were born," it begins, "even before there were oceans, or stars, or morning light, God was already dreaming of you." The book moves through the small details that make your child who they are, the sound of their voice, their smile and their tears, and it says plainly what every child needs to hear: "You aren't a mistake, and you never could be." Near the end it invites your child to tell God how their day really felt.

It's the first book in the Theo series, and a gentle one to read when questions about belonging feel big.

  • A child sleeps curled up inside a swirl of golden light among the stars in God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You.

Before you were born God was already dreaming of you.

  • A smiling child sits in a sunny meadow with a rabbit, a fawn, a squirrel and birds in God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You.

Made on purpose "Your life carries a purpose only you can live."

  • A child laughs and dances in a golden field surrounded by small glowing faces showing different feelings in God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You.

Every feeling "He gave you your smile and your tears."

God Called Me By My Name

This one begins like a guided rest: "Place your hands over your heart. Gently close your eyes, and take a deep breath." Then it tells your child that God knew their name before anyone ever said it out loud, that He sings it in the morning and whispers it on hard days, and that "you're never invisible to Him, and never unimportant." It closes with a line drawn from Luke 10:20, where Jesus tells his disciples to rejoice that their names are written in heaven, and a soft goodnight.

Hearing their own name in a book is a thrill for any child. In this book, the name is the whole point.

  • A girl lies in bed smiling as soft rays of light and doves come through the clouds in God Called Me By My Name.

A lullaby God says your name softly to help you rest.

  • A girl with closed eyes holds her glowing hands together over her heart, with a soft heart of light behind her, in God Called Me By My Name.

Seen and loved "You are His beloved child."

  • A girl seen from behind looks out of an open window at a sunny garden path, a church in the distance and a white dove on the sill, in God Called Me By My Name.

A purpose "You carry a seed of light that only you can bring into the world."

A Psalm 23 book for kids: The Psalm of the Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 is one of the first passages many families teach, and The Psalm of the Good Shepherd turns it into a guided bedtime meditation. It starts by settling the room: "find a quiet, comfortable place," close your eyes and breathe. Then it tells the story behind the psalm. Your child meets David as a boy caring for sheep on soft green hills, sees the courage that took on Goliath with a sling, and watches him grow into a king who loved music and wrote songs.

The turn comes when David realizes God cares for him the way he cares for his sheep. "This psalm is like giving God a gentle hug," the book says. Then it reads Psalm 23 in full, in modern wording, and ends with a short prayer your child can say with you. It's a good one for tired or uncertain days, and an older child may like saying the psalm along with you.

  • A child stands on a green hill at sunrise watching young David with his shepherd's staff and his sheep in The Psalm of the Good Shepherd.

The young shepherd David cares for his sheep on the green hills.

  • King David plays a harp on his throne while the child sits on the steps listening in The Psalm of the Good Shepherd.

The king who loved music David writes songs and poems for God.

  • David holds a lamb beside the child in a sunlit meadow full of sheep in The Psalm of the Good Shepherd.

The Good Shepherd God cares for us like a shepherd cares for his sheep.

For hard days: When You Only See Footprints

Some nights call for comfort more than calm. When You Only See Footprints retells the well-loved Footprints story as a dream. Your child walks a sunset beach beside Jesus while scenes from their life play across the sky: birthdays, laughing with friends, learning to ride a bike. In every happy scene there are two sets of footprints. Then the scenes change to harder days, a test that went badly, nights of crying, unkind words and sick days, and the sand shows only one set.

"Those footprints were never yours," a gentle voice explains. "I was carrying you in my arms."

Footprints is a modern devotional poem rather than a Bible passage, and the book presents it as a story. Because it names sad moments, read it yourself first if your child is grieving or anxious, so you know where it goes. It's a book to keep close for those seasons.

  • Jesus walks along a sunset beach beside a small girl, both leaving footprints in the sand, in When You Only See Footprints.

Not alone Jesus walks right beside your child.

  • Jesus and the girl watch a birthday scene with a cake and candles appear in the golden clouds in When You Only See Footprints.

The happy days Two sets of footprints in every one.

  • The girl and Jesus stand at the water's edge at sunset, with two sets of footprints behind them, in When You Only See Footprints.

Carried "Jesus had never once let go."

For laughing together: The Tickles of God

Not every bedtime book needs to be hushed. In The Tickles of God, your child is rolling in the grass under a lemon tree when they ask Grandma a big question: "Why do we laugh?" Grandma tells how God shaped the first man and breathed life into him, the book's retelling of Genesis 2, and wonders if the first thing he ever saw was God's smile. Then she blows softly on your child's nose until they giggle.

Your child decides to "help God make tickles": a funny drawing for a man at the store who never smiles, a joke for a brother, cookies that never make it into the oven. The question the book leaves behind is a good one for any family: "Who else needs a laugh today?" It's a lovely book for a grandparent to read aloud.

  • A little girl lies in the grass among fallen lemons with her arms spread wide in The Tickles of God.

A big question "Grandma, why do we laugh?"

  • The girl laughs with her eyes closed, leaning back against her grandmother, in The Tickles of God.

A secret Grandma blows softly on her nose.

  • The girl laughs out loud under the lemon tree as leaves fall around her in The Tickles of God.

Sharing joy "Who else needs a laugh today?"

How do I teach a toddler to pray at bedtime?

You don't need a script. Small children learn to pray the way they learn everything else, by doing it with you, a little at a time, at the same point every night. A few things help:

  1. Put it in the same place in the routine. After the story and before lights out works for most families, so the book leads straight into the prayer.
  2. Give one prompt, not five. "Who do you love?" or "What was good today?" is plenty for a two-year-old.
  3. Let them say it their way. One sentence counts. So does a whispered name. As A Few Minutes With Jesus puts it, "You don't need complicated words."
  4. Pray for people by name. Children love naming Grandma, a friend from school or the dog.
  5. End the same way each night. A short line you always say together tells your child the day is done.

What is a good Christian bedtime book for a 2-year-old?

At two, a bedtime book is mostly about the pictures, the sound of your voice and the routine. Look for short lines, a calm tone and something your child can point to. A personalized book adds the best thing to point at: themselves. Ask "Where are you?" on each page, and read their name with a little pause so they can say it with you.

The quieter Theo books, God Called Me By My Name, God Dreamed You Up and The Psalm of the Good Shepherd, suit the last minutes before sleep. A two-year-old may not sit through every page, and that's fine; read a few spreads and save the rest. By four to six, most children follow the whole book as a read-aloud, and by seven to ten many like reading it to you. Our books are written for ages 2 to 10.

Faith gifts from godparents and grandparents

A book that speaks to a child by name, and gives them words to pray, makes a thoughtful faith gift for Christmas, a birthday or a First Communion. For a grandparent, The Tickles of God is a natural choice, since it's built around a grandmother and a grandchild. For a godparent, a blessing such as God Called Me By My Name says something lasting.

Buying for a child who isn't yours? Ask their parent or guardian for permission to use a photo, and check how the family spells the name. Our Help article on buying a book as a gift walks through it, and our gift wrap guide explains when wrapping is offered at checkout. One honest note: the books are for ages 2 to 10 and need a photo of the child, so for a baby's baptism they're a gift for a few years later.

How a personalized Christian book works

Three steps: add a photo of your child, see a free preview, then get the hardcover, printed to order.
  1. Add a photo and your child's name. One clear photo is enough. Your child becomes the illustrated character in the story, and the text uses their name.
  2. See a free preview. Creating your child's character and preview needs no credit card. The preview shows your child in a scene from the book, not every page, so look through the sample pages in this guide too. Read more about the free preview.
  3. Get the hardcover. Each book is printed to order after you buy. In the US, printing takes 3 to 5 business days, and Standard delivery arrives 5 to 10 business days after you order. Checkout shows the estimate for your address.

Questions parents ask

What are the best Christian bedtime books for kids?

The best ones are short enough to finish before sleep, calm enough to end the day, and give a child simple words to pray. From our own Theo collection: A Few Minutes With Jesus is a guided first prayer, God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You and God Called Me By My Name are bedtime blessings, The Psalm of the Good Shepherd brings Psalm 23 to bedtime, When You Only See Footprints is for hard days, and The Tickles of God is about joy. Each one stars your child. This is our guide to our own books, not an independent ranking.

What is a good first prayer book for a child?

Look for a book that shows prayer as talking with God in ordinary words rather than a text to memorize. A Few Minutes With Jesus does that: it walks your child through praying for the people they love, asking for what they need, saying sorry and saying thank you, and it uses your child's name throughout. Our books are written for ages 2 to 10; younger children enjoy it as a read-aloud.

How do I teach a toddler to pray at bedtime?

Keep it short and do it at the same point every night, after the story and before lights out. Give one simple prompt, such as someone you love or something good from today, and let your child answer in their own words, even with one sentence. End the same way each night so the prayer becomes part of the routine.

Is there a Psalm 23 book for kids?

Yes. The Psalm of the Good Shepherd is a guided bedtime meditation that introduces David as a young shepherd and then as a king who wrote songs, reads Psalm 23 in full in modern wording, and closes with a short prayer. Your child is in the story, walking the green hills beside David.

Is the Footprints poem in the Bible?

No. Footprints is a modern devotional poem, not a Bible passage, though it is loved by many Christians. When You Only See Footprints retells it as a child's dream, with Jesus carrying the child through hard days. It names sad moments such as sick days and unkind words, so read it first if your child is going through something painful.

Are the Theo books Catholic or Protestant?

The books present themselves as Christian and do not name a denomination. They include prayers to Jesus, Scripture such as Psalm 23, and stories from everyday family life. Read the descriptions and look at the sample pages to see whether the language suits your family's practice.

What is a good faith gift from a godparent or grandparent?

A book that speaks to the child by name and gives them words to pray works for Christmas, a birthday or a First Communion. Any Theo book can be bought once as a gift. Ask the child's parent or guardian for permission to use a photo, and check how the family spells the name. The books are for ages 2 to 10, so for a baby's baptism they would need to wait.

Can we get all the Theo books, one a month?

Yes, in the US. With a Magic Story+ membership, the Theo track sends the next Theo book your child does not have each month, starting with God Dreamed You Up, Then Created You. After all twelve, the membership continues with other personalized stories until you cancel. You can cancel from your account; our Help article on canceling Magic Story+ explains the deadline before each renewal.
