Best Wonderbly Alternatives (2026): Drawn From Your Child's Photo

Quick answer: for parents who want their actual child in the book, the best Wonderbly alternative is Magic Story, because it draws your child from their photo instead of an avatar you build from options. You upload one photo, we turn it into your child's illustrated hero, and you see a free personalized preview before you pay. The finished book is a keepsake hardcover, and in November 2026 our books were rated 4.9 out of 5 across more than 9,000 reviews.

Picture the moment your child opens the book and finds their own face looking back from the page. Not a character that happens to share their hair color, but them: their smile, their eyes, their name in the story. That's the reaction Magic Story is made for.

Why parents choose Magic Story

Their face, not a look-alike

Many personalized books ask you to build a character: pick a hairstyle, a skin tone, maybe glasses. That character can resemble your child, but it isn't drawn from them. Magic Story starts from one photo. We use AI to turn it into your child's illustrated character in the book's art style, and that same character appears throughout the story, with your child's name in the text.

A free preview before you pay

You don't have to take our word for the likeness. Upload a photo and, within a few minutes, you see your child as the hero in a scene from the book you choose. Each product page also has sample pages with our example child, so you can read the story itself. Creating the character and the preview needs no credit card, and if the character doesn't look right, choose Try Again or New Photo. Our photo tips explain which photos work best.

A hardcover made to keep

The current new-customer format is an 11.25 by 8.75 inch landscape hardcover, printed after you order. The standard US one-time price is $44.99 before shipping and tax. Our books are designed for children ages 2 to 10, and some books give their own range.

A new adventure every month

With Magic Story+, your child gets a new personalized hardcover each month for $24.99 in the US, before shipping and tax, on the standard monthly hardcover plan. Your child's character carries from book to book, so they keep starring in new stories.

A Christmas tradition with your child in it

Six Days Until Christmas is six personalized hardcovers to open one a night from December 19 to Christmas Eve, with your child as Santa's helper in every book. It's sold only as the complete set, and one photo personalizes all six.

Your photo stays private

Our privacy policy says we do not save the original photo you upload. We save the illustrated avatar created from it so you can personalize your stories, and we do not use customer data, including uploaded photos and generated avatars, to train AI models.

Magic Story vs Wonderbly and other alternatives

Magic Story publishes this guide. Details about the other companies come from their own websites on November 5, 2026.

How the other companies compare

Wonderbly. You build your child's character by choosing from hair and skin tone options, and some titles print a photo you upload in the book. A printed photo isn't the hero: the illustrated character is still built from options. On November 5, 2026, its titles started from about $35, without the format named.

Hooray Heroes. You build the character from options such as hair, skin tone and eyes, and its books can include up to five children or a pet. We found no option to upload a photo to create the character, so the hero won't be drawn from your child's face. On November 5, 2026, its softcovers were on sale from about $30, with hardcovers about $10 more.

I See Me! Its keepsakes are built around your child's name. In My Very Own Name, animals bring the letters of the name in rhyme, and a photo of your child is printed on the first page; the illustrations aren't drawn from that photo.

Librio. You build a character from options such as skin tone, hair and glasses, and the books come in many languages. As with Wonderbly and Hooray Heroes, the character is chosen from options, not drawn from a photo.

If your child's actual face in the story is the point of the gift, Magic Story is built for exactly that. See your child in a free preview.

What about siblings?

Every child gets to be the star. Each Magic Story book has one main child hero, so brothers and sisters each get a book about them, drawn from their own photo, and nobody has to share the spotlight. Some titles, such as I Love You Dad, also add a parent, grandparent or pet alongside your child. Our Help article on books for siblings walks through the options.

Is it made with AI?

Yes. We use AI to draw your child into each story from your photo, which is how the hero can look like your child instead of a look-alike. You see your child's personalized preview before you pay, so you judge the likeness yourself, and you can try again with a new photo if it isn't right.
